The first video that I found was about a girl who experienced a life long passion for Shakespeare. I’m not sure if this is considered to be a personal essay but she does seem to put a lot individual thoughts, imagery, and compassion into it. During watching the video you really can kind of feel her pain and desire. It’s interesting to me to see the actual video with the words. At first I just listened to the video, and then I watched it with the pictures and it was a very interesting approach to her expressing her view points. What I think makes this a personal essay is also the way she brings in bits of pieces of her story to build up to a bigger story about how she felt she defeated Shakespeare by having a baby with someone else. It was pretty vivid imagery used in her words throughout the video as well. In this video I also see how she uses her past and memories to describe how she now feels that she is having a child. It’s intersting to see how her tone of voice changes too. It does this at one point when she adds in a work from Shakespeare. The entire video I can feel the sadness and disappointment in ther voice when she feels that she is falling away from Shakespeare. Bearing a child seems to be something that is not as happy as it should be because it is not with Shakespeare. I think this has many qualities of a personal essay. I’m not sure if it really is one, but it does seem to hold many of the charachterisitics of one.
The second video that I am posting is about a boy who started to have a passion for star wars at a young age and makes this video about how he wrote a book about them when he was younger. I feel as if this qualifies as a personal essay because of the way he takes a look into his past and uses it as a trigger for the future. The events of his past tie in to a bigger part of his life and his future and turns into a whole instead of just bits and pieces. Even though this video has no speaking and minimal words, the words that he chose to use do play a big part in getting the purpose of the imagery across. I like how strong the beginning of this video starts because the techniques of the music and the pictures really make it feel strong and something that means a lot to this person. Along with memories and imagery, this video shows a recurring theme throughout. The guy in the video continues to go back to his dream and the Star Wars theme throughout. I think this is a personal essay because of the things that I just noted. I think maybe it would qualify more if the guy actually spoke throughout it, but overall it’s pretty intersting to me to see how he approached what he wanted to get across.
